Raising Gazorpazorp

In season one, Raising Gazopazorp was about Summer and Rick’s journey to a planet that was a matriarchal society. Rick decides to travel alone to this planet, but Summer insists that she should come along. Rick denies her because he does not “do adventures with chicks.” Summer scuffs and asks how her being a woman makes a difference in this situation. Accidentally, Summer falls into the portal that leads to the mysterious planet and Rick has to save her from over-sized monsters that appear. The portal gun that was going to be used to get them home breaks in the process. Rick has a I-told-you-so moment and blames this on Summer’s “stupid boobs.” Rick is acting as the typical male who pins everything defective onto Summer because she is a girl. Since he usually takes his grandson Morty on adventures he assumes Summer will be dead weight on their journey. Just because of her gender, Rick assumes Summer will be getting in his way instead of helping. By the end of this episode Summer is the reason they get home safely instead of Rick having to ruin an entire planet like he usually does in other episodes. This could be seen as the traditional ‘girls can do what guys can do and better’ trope. In our society outside of the show, men underestimate the capabilities of women, just like Rick did. Which could correlate to why women’s salaries are less than men’s. They just cannot comprehend that a woman can do the same tasks men can do. In a nytimes.com article, Jan Fields speaks about being a higher up in business for Mcdonalds. Fields held the number two spot at the company and many of her male colleagues did not understand why. She felt out of place because of the mass amount of men in charge and lonely at times. Other male colleagues were doubting her abilities, but "its didn't really last that long because they saw my production, and when they did start to work for me, they realized 'She was not that bad' " (Fields). Although Rick was too headstrong to admit it, Summer did help them stay alive just by speaking to the female Gazorpians. If anything, she assisted more than Morty usually does on an adventure. Just like when Field's workers saw she was capable to being in charge, they realized their initial judgement was incorrect. But, why even assume she is not qualified enough just because she is a woman? This is a constant issue with the public and Rick and Morty included this idea in the episode in order to shows that it does not logically make sense to judge a person's performance because of their sex.

Once they meet the female Gazorpians, Rick automatically assumes the masked individuals are men. The women take off their hoods and Rick realizes they are towering goddess like women. Rick assumes the leaders of the planet to be men and this can be transparent in our own reality. Some men may expect other men to be in charge because it has been this way for centuries. This relates to how Jan Field's workers were skeptical only because of her sex. Since men are more likely to hold higher ranked jobs, some men are shocked to see a woman in charge. Rick was not anticipating to stumble upon a matriarchal society since it is not as common in our world’s history. The female ruler of the space craft is named Mar-sha and she tries to strangle Rick because he is a ill-mannered man. Summer convinces them that her grandfather is her slave in order to protect him. Eventually, Mar-sha finds out that it is a scam and puts them on a line to await their punishment. While they are on line another woman Gazorpian asks Rick what “he’s in for.” He responds by saying that its due to his penis between his legs. Mar-sha sentenced Rick to death by boulder solely because of his biological differences to the superior society. This can be related to our lives today because women are seen as less than men because we are not biologically like them. Women are still human beings, yet we face obstacles men do not. Women are targeted just for having female anatomy, like when Rick blamed this whole situation on Summer’s breast. Yes, on an extreme level, Rick got a sense of how it feels to be a woman in modern day America and treated unfairly because of his sex (which he is obviously not used to).
